Behind the Benches is the brainchild of super best friends Mike Murphy (SB Nation, Sporting News contributor) and Shayna Goldman (SB Nation, The Athletic, Hockey-Graphs). As is often the case, Mike had a big idea for a project but didn't know how to make it become a reality. So, he turned to his most frequent collaborator and partner-in-crime. Together, they spent an ungodly number of hours during the summer of 2018 planning, researching, and building Behind the Benches.
Up until now, there hasn't been a convenient way to look up the specific roles and histories of NHL coaching staffs. Behind the Benches hopes to change that. We want our site to be a trustworthy resource for fans and members of the media who want to know more about coaches and what they do. Eventually, we plan to expand our data into leagues outside of the NHL, including the AHL, NCAA D-1, the CWHL, and the NWHL. Behind the Benches wouldn't have been possible without the expertise and knowledge of Alexa Goldman, who helped turn a labyrinth of Google Sheets into a website. We'd also like to thank Casey Sudetic, who helped create the site's logo. |
